XIXe siècle, aux Etats-Unis. Isabella reçoit une lettre de sa petite-fille, Mathilda, qui lui décrit sa misère. Mary, sa mère, peine а exploiter sa ferme et а élever ses trois enfants depuis la mort de son mari. A l’approche des fêtes de Noлl, Isabella décide alors de rendre visite а Mary, afin de l’aider financièrement. Mais les relations entre Isabella et Mary sont difficiles; malgré ses difficultés, Mary reste fière et refuse toute aide de cette dernière.
